Canada's shipments to China were stable on a monthly basis at 893,243t, registering an annual increase of 246pc. But shipments to traditional Asian markets India, Japan, and South Korea fell by 46.2pc, 44.2pc, and 81pc to 173,497t, 281,900t, and 59,400t, respectively, as buyers looked to Australian coal rather than competing with undersupplied Chinese mills, and in line with Teck's intention to focus on spot trade with China after the fire damage to its rail lines.

Secondly, he said Canadian thermal coal has a high energy output, so one tonne may produce equivalent energy to a larger amount of coal produced elsewhere. That helps offset shipping costs.
Even though Canadian thermal coal must be shipped halfway around the world, it remains marketable to Asian countriesfinancialpost.com

China imported 4.91mn t of coking coal in March, down by 13pc from last year but up by 52pc from a 13-month low in February, according to Chinese customs data.
January-March imports declined by 46pc to 11.25mn t. China has banned coal imports from Australia since October.
US and Canadian coking coal imports surged to the highest levels since 2013. US imports gained nearly fivefold to 663,000t on the year, the highest since August 2013, while Canadian imports doubled to 1.2mn t on the year, the highest since September 2013. March seaborne imports tumbled by 51pc to 2.74mn t from a year earlier but rose by 84pc from February.
Mongolian imports recovered to 2.17mn t in March from 50t a year earlier when Covid lockdowns closed the border with China. Mongolian imports increased by 25pc from February as Chinese mills ramped up offtake after the lunar new year holiday, but a resurgence of Covid cases in the middle of March near the Ganqimaodu border is expected to weigh on imports in April. January-March imports from Mongolia rose by 123pc to 6.08mn t from a year earlier.
There were no Australian cargoes cleared by customs in March. Customs authorities allowed some Australian coal vessels to unload at major Chinese ports such as Caofeidian and Jingtang after the lunar new year, but only for humanitarian reasons and without granting customs clearance.
Spot seaborne trade slowed in early February before the lunar new year but rebounded as state-controlled mills resumed restocking after the holiday particularly for premium low-volatile grades. This came as hopes of Beijing lifting the import ban on Australian coal faded on increasingly strained ties between the countries.
The Argus premium low-volatile hard coking coal price delivered on a cfr China basis hit a two-year high of $220/t on 26 February but retreated to $214.95 on 31 March, as Chinese buyers held back because of higher cfr offers. The Argus premium low-volatile hard coking coal price on a fob Australia basis fell by 13pc to $110.50/t over the same period, with cfr China prices maintaining a premium of more than $100/t above fob Australia.
